Sharon Haughey-Grimley was the first appointed Lord Mayor of Armagh City & District in 2012/2013
Cllr Sharon Haughey-Grimley was elected to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for the Cusher District Electoral Area.
The SDLP Representative was first elected in 2005, when she was 24 years young. In 2018, Sharon announced that she was taking a break from elected politics to concrete on raising her young family. Keeping her promise to the people, she completed her term until May 2019.
Sharon was well known as a hard-working representative who was always willing to represent people within her constituency to the very best of her ability.
Sharon Haughey, first came to prominence as a 14 year old when she wrote to President Bill Clinton ahead of his first presidential visit to Northern Ireland. The President was so struck by Sharon's letter outlining her hope of peace that he shared it during his speech at the switching on of the Christmas Tree Lights in Belfast.
In 1998, President Bill Clinton requested to meet Sharon in her home town of Armagh, where she introduced him before a world wide audience. Sharon made a real impact across the country and indeed across the world with her plea for peace. She even received a marriage proposal from India.
Later in 1998, after John Hume requested a meeting with her in Newry Sharon joined the SDLP and began her political career. She was later appointed as the youngest Member of NI Civic Forum. In 2003, she worked with Senator Hillary Clinton in her Senate Office in Washington DC through the Washington Ireland Programme.
Sharon has maintained a strong relationship with the Clintons until this very day. During her year as Lord Mayor Hillary Clinton publicly spoke of her pride in Sharon being appointed as Lord Mayor during her keynote speech in Titanic Belfast. In 2018, on the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement Hillary Clinton dedicated much of her acceptance speech at Queen's University for her honoury degree to Sharon.
