Speaking from the Party Conference, which was held in Newcastle last weekend, Councillor Haughey said, “I am delighted that Margaret Ritchie will now lead the SDLP. Margaret has left an impression on everyone through her role as Minister for Social Development and I have no doubt that this is a positive move for the party. I wish Margaret every success as leader and I look forward to welcoming her back to the Newry and Armagh Constituency soon.
“It is great to see the SDLP being progressive in choosing a woman to be leader and shows that we really are the party of equality.
“It is also a good indictment of the Party to have two strong contenders running for leadership, in Margaret and Alasdair McDonnell. Both are two credible politicians who have much to offer the party. Their campaigns for leadership have helped motivate members and to inspire people.
“I wish Alasdair every success as his attentions now focus on regaining his South Belfast seat and I very much look forward to seeing change being driven by the SDLP’s new Leader, Margaret Ritchie.”
