The Lord Mayor of Armagh City and District, Councillor Sharon Haughey-Grimley, hosted a reception for a group of students from Lycée Saint Paul, Orléans who were spending a week with pupils from Saint Catherine’s College. This year is the 20th anniversary of the Exchange Programme.

SDLP Councillor Sharon Haughey has called on Road Service to introduce flashing school lights and new road markings at St James and St Josephs Primary School in Poyntzpass.
Speaking on Monday night at full council meeting Cllr Haughey said, "I welcome the Safer Routes to School scheme which has been implemented atPoyntzpass Primary School and I urge Road Service to implement similar measures at St James and St Joseph's Primary School which is literally across the road. We would need these flashing lights approaching from Acton. "Some years ago I successfully secure road markings for St Joseph's Primary School in Poyntzpass but parents are still concerned that this area is dangerous at school time, especially with the additional children from Tandragee. "Parents will rightly think it is very unfair for one school in Poyntzpass to get this Safer Routes to School Programme while the neighbouring Primary School is rejected. I urge Road Service to grant the same measures for St James and St Joseph's Primary School as Poyntzpass Primary." Road Service Officials acknowledged Cllr Haughey's ongoing campaigning for this and said they hoped that a similar scheme would be rolled out to St James and St Joseph's Primary School. However they highlighted that this was unlikely in the current financial year. ENDS SDLP Councillor Sharon Haughey has asked the Chief Executive of Armagh City and District Council to set up a meeting with the Post 16 group campaigning for access to the Lisnally Hydro Pool.
Cllr Haughey was speaking at the September monthly council meeting, she said, “Before the May elections we held a very useful meeting with parents of children who attended Lisnally Special School in Armagh in relation to their plight to gain access to the hydro pool after their children left the school. “The issues raised at that meeting have been progressed through council for some time now and I welcome clarification from the Trust that any child or young person whose doctor recommends hydrotherapy will receive it at Craigavon Hospital. I also welcome a commitment from Lisnally and the Trust that the hydro pool can be used in the evening times by the community, however a physiotherapist is required to be in attendance for the therapy to be effective. “I now request that a meeting is organised with the Post 16 Group to advise parents of the current situation and to highlights council’s support for the campaign. I ask that Community Manager Godfrey McCartney attends this meeting to advise the group on formally organising as a ‘voluntary group’ so that the group can apply for funding to cover the costs of a physiotherapist. I ask that this meeting is arranged as soon as possible as it was May when this issue was first raised with the Council.” ENDS |
