Cllr Haughey said, "This is an interesting initiative which has the capacity to showcase and recognise the efforts of cultural organisations right across the district. I believe a cultural night could help promote the diversity of culture of all our people.
"When this idea came before Council it was suggested that all events as part of this cultural evening should be free to access. That is great to encourage people to attend, however through my work with a number of cultural organisations I understand the financial difficulties cultural groups are facing and I also understand the costs involved in putting on a free event. I think the only way for this initiative to be truly effective is to offer financial assistance to groups hoping to get involved.
"Funds are extremely tight everywhere and that includes the Council's financial assistance pot, however I believe a criteria should be drawn up to allow voluntary groups to obtain small grants to host cultural nights as part of the culture night initiative.
"I also think that this initiative could help to breakdown cultural barriers by promoting events which are cross culture, and I recommend that as a key criteria for funding. This would inspire groups from very different backgrounds to work together to promote their diverse cultures to one audience. I attended an event last year organised by Armagh GAA County Board and the Ulster Scots Agency, it was a wonderful night which celebrated the music, song, dance and storytelling of both cultures. I believe this is the model that should be replicated as part of Armagh's Cultural Evening."
