Cllr Haughey is also urging local community associations to consider applying for this funding across the district. Cllr Haughey said, “The idea of developing Community Allotments and Community Gardens is gathering momentum. A combination of economic hardship and a focus on healthy lifestyles is encouraging greater interest in community allotments and gardens and now there is funding potential for any group interested in developing an initiative like this in their own area.
“Community allotments and community gardens provide an opportunity for people with little or no outside space to take a plot to grow their own fruit and vegetables. These kinds of initiatives provide people with a positive outlet to enjoy the outdoors and our natural environment. They also promote a healthier lifestyle for local people with emphasis on home grown fruit and vegetables.
“There has been much discussion between Armagh City and District Council and Armagh Allotments Group about providing greater opportunities across the district to develop allotments and community gardens. Council have released land for these purposes and now this new funding from the Public Health Agency could help make community allotments a reality for many.”
Application forms and full detail in relation to this funding is available at www.publichealth.hscni.net . The closing date for applications is Friday 7th October 2011. An information session is also being held for local community groups on Friday 30th September from 2pm to 5pm in Armagh Fire Station, Loughgall Road.
