The Old Dyke Inn, Poyntzpass was packed to the rafters as the election workers formally congratulated their councillor who retained the SDLP’s long-held seat in Cusher.
Party Deputy Leader Patsy McGlone and Assembly Member for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley were both in attendance, as were many of Sharon’s family and friends.
Cllr Haughey used the opportunity to express her appreciation of all the work undertaken by her election workers, speaking to the large crowd she said, “It’s great to be here with you all tonight, and it’s great to be back as councillor for Cusher. “Tonight is celebration but its also an appreciation – for me an appreciation of all those people who helped out in any way during my election campaign, I couldn’t have done it without you.”
SDLP Deputy Leader Patsy McGlone paid tribute to Sharon, who has been councillor for the area for over six years, he said, “Everyone in this area can be very proud to have Sharon as their representative. She is extremely hard working, always willing to help and a strong voice for the people of this area. She has been doing a great job since her first election in 2005 and the people of this area have put their faith in her again to return her to Armagh City and District Council. I wish her every success in the years to come.”
A special presentation was made on the night by the Chairman of Markethill SDLP Branch Brendan Woolsey who presented Sharon with a beautiful Newbridge Watch to mark her magnificent achievement. Guests at the event enjoyed a home-cooked buffet followed by a session of traditional Irish singing from Madden Songbird Catherine Grimley and her sisters Paula and Maria. A great night was had by all.
