Councillor Sharon Haughey has commended the organisers of the Tommy Makem International Song Festival for a remarkable three-day event which brought hundreds of people to our city and district.
Cllr Haughey, who is Chair of Armagh Council’s Internal Scrutiny Committee commented, “I attended the Keepers of Tradition event which took place on the Friday night of the festival in Armagh City Hotel. It was a wonderful evening of song and music and a fitting memorial of the beloved songs of Tommy and Sarah Makem.
“This is an event that I love to attend every year and every year it continues to get bigger and better. The Hotel was jammed full for the event and I really believe that this Song Festival is one of Armagh’s greatest events.
“I must pay tribute to the Makem family for organising this festival. In doing so, they bring so many people to our City and District from across Ireland, England, the rest of Europe and America.
“This Festival showcases the strong song tradition of County Armagh and I know the festival followers really enjoyed themselves in Derrynoose, Armagh City and at the Navan Centre. This is an event which really deserves council support and I hope to see this increase over the coming years.”
