SDLP Councillor Sharon Haughey has urged walkers and cyclists to make sure they are visible on the roads in these dark nights.
Cllr Haughey said, “A number of drivers have reported to me their concerns about the amount of people out on the roads in the evening time in dark clothing. This is also something I have noticed myself and is extremely dangerous.
“More and more people are opting for walking and cycling on our roads as a way to keep fit and healthy. But with the dark evenings setting in, it can be a dangerous pursuit.
“It is very important that anyone going on out onto our roads wears reflective gear. High visibility vests and jackets are readily available, as are reflective armbands and I would urge all road walkers and cyclists to make sure to be seen when out on our roads by wearing this gear.”
Cllr Haughey continued, “I would also urge parents to ensure that children wear reflective gear when travelling to and from school. Unfortunately many school uniforms are dark and difficult to see when it’s dropping down dark. A simple reflective armband or reflective school bag can help to ensure children are safe when walking to and from school.”
