Speaking as Road Service Officials presented their plan to Armagh City and District Council Cllr Sharon Haughey said, “The problems of parking in Markethill have been rumbling on for many years now and I welcome at long last some positive proposals to help resolve this ongoing problem.
“I believe the parking restriction of 2 hours in every 3 hours, will allow local people sufficient time to do their business in Markethill while also keeping a constant turnover of available parking spaces. I hope that this will go some way in resolving some of the parking issues in the town.
“However, some residents have expressed concern about the displacement of all-day parked cars from Main Street and Keady Street to Newry Street, Bunker Hill and Seaboughan Road. I share those concerns and it is vital that Road Service implement these new waiting restrictions as a 3 to 6 month pilot so that the issue of displacement can be considered if it proves to be an issue.“People are often anxious with talk of new waiting restrictions; however I feel that once this is in place then the traders, residents and customers of Markethill will all see the benefits.
“This proposal should help to ease the parking problems of Main Street and Keady Street, however it will do little to combat the difficulties posed by mart traffic and that is something that also needs to be addressed.”
