Lord Mayo Haughey said, “In existence for almost 50 years, there have been many talented families and music lovers involved in Keady Comhaltas over the years, their involvement has been a labour of love – a love for the Irish music and Irish tradition. Many people, and in particular young people have learned to play instruments and have learned to perform, through their involvement in Comhaltas. That is a beautiful gift which continues to be handed down from generation to generation.
“With over 40 members, Keady Comhaltas is one of the strongest branches in Ulster and the weekly sessions in Cassey’s Pub every Wednesday night are enjoyed by many local people, and many visitors to this district.
“Congratulations to Méabh Smyth from Ballymacnab, who undoubtedly has music in her blood, as both her mother Rosie and father Thomas, are well known in trad circles. But Méabh is making a name for herself and is surely one to watch for the future. We are all so proud that at the young age Meabh has come 3rd in Ireland for playing the Fiddle. Well Done Méabh!
“Congratulations also to Connor Mallon, who is well known in Keady and beyond, for his performances on the Uilleann Pipes. We are all incredibly proud of Connor as he came 2nd at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. This is a remarkable achievement for Connor and there is no doubt he is a credit to his family, to Keady Comhaltas and to the entire district.”
Lord Mayor Haughey presented gifts to Meabh and Connor in recognition of their All Ireland achievements.
